Frequently Asked Questions about the S.T.O.P. Program
When does S.T.O.P. meet?
S.T.O.P. meets for seven weeks on Wednesday evenings January to Mid-March from 6:45 to 8:15 p.m. S.T.O.P. does not meet during Lincoln-Sudbury Exam week, or Sudbury school vacation week.
Where does S.T.O.P. meet?
S.T.O.P. sessions rotate their meetings among the participating houses of worship. All S.T.O.P. participants are sent a schedule of dates and meeting places in December.
What happens at a S.T.O.P. session?
The sessions are made up of a variety of activities including skits, videos, and small group discussions. The goal of each activity is to increase the participant’s awareness of their own personal uniqueness and the exceptionality of the other participants.
Participants learn to identify stereotyping and constructive ways to respond. Each time we meet at a new congregation there is a presentation of that faith. This helps us to appreciate and respect the faith of those they are with.
S.T.O.P. participants also hear talks by older teens about their experiences and insights regarding prejudice and discrimination.
Do you have to live in Sudbury to join?
No. The membership includes young people from Sudbury as well as from many surrounding communities.
Do you have to belong to an organized religion to join?
No. Many of the participants do belong to area Houses of Worship because those faith groups have made a commitment to this program and encourage their youths to join. Other young people have joined because they heard about S.T.O.P. from a friend or at school or the Teen Center.
Does it cost anything to join?
There is a $35.00 fee per year for S.T.O.P. to cover assorted materials and administrative expenses. We also welcome additional donations from participating families to fund extra resources.
Who are the Leaders?
Adults Advisers from the participating congregations are present at the sessions and lead the large group activities. The small group discussions are led by our High School facilitators who have been in S.T.O.P. since 6th, 7th, or 8th grade and have stayed active in the program.
